Northern Lights Chase

The Mudrut Northern Lights Chase is an incredible Arctic experience, driving across Europe and up through Scandinavia to Nordkapp; at 71˚ it is the northernmost point in mainland Europe. The aim is to witness the other-worldly beauty of the Aurora Borealis but the trip is so much more - it’s the adventure of a lifetime!

Let the adventure begin..

Our convoy begins its journey in England with an overnight ferry to mainland Europe. If you have limited time available, you can instead choose to fly across and meet your vehicle in Oslo.

The lead vehicle is also a late-model, fully prepared Defender, carrying additional equipment to support the trip and ensure the safety and comfort of the group. Our convoy maintains constant contact through CB and our lead vehicle is equipped with satellite communications for areas where cell coverage is not available. You will receive advice in how to fully prepare for such a trip but extra supplies are carried in case of emergency or an extended delay.

Our guides have many years of travel experience and have completed 4x4 and emergency First Aid training. They are experienced in vehicle repair and maintenance and will be armed with detailed maps of your expedition. The route you take will have been thoroughly researched and we use information gained from past trips to improve future expeditions.

As our group progresses north, the roads will give way to a solid covering of snow and ice

Through Denmark, into Sweden over the breath-taking Öresund Bridge and in turn into Norway over the Svinesundbron, our team will work towards the first camp by Lake Mjøsa. Here, all the preparation will be put to the test for the first time as our group makes their first snowbound stop at around minus 20 degrees.

For the authentic Nordic experience, we recommend hiring our nine man Tipi tent, complete with log burning stoves and reindeer skins for extra snugness. However you may choose to employ a roof-tent with an air heater, on your own vehicle. However the night is spent, our guides are on hand to help you set up camp ready for a warm place to sleep. In the morning there will be time to take in the breath-taking scenery and prepare for the day’s driving ahead.

As our group progresses north, the roads will give way to a solid covering of snow and ice, making it likely that we will join a convoy behind a snowplough at one of the many snow-barriers on the E6. This is an exhilarating driving experience and you will be given guidance prior to and during the trip.

Past Expedition Gallery

Norway is a land of fjords and frozen lakes.

Subsequent camps at the Arctic Circle and on the edge of a fjord are interspersed with cosy stays in welcoming cabins as we endeavour to reach our goal at Honningsvåg. The northernmost city in Norway provides the best chance for us to see the Northern Lights and also marks the halfway mark of this epic adventure. Leaving Honningsvåg behind on a south-easterly heading, temperatures will drop still further during a cabin-based stopover in Karaskok and a brief crossing of Finland. (We have seen temperatures below minus 40 degrees in previous years.) A two night stop in Kiruna, one of the most affluent and exciting northern Swedish towns, will afford an opportunity to visit the stunning Ice Hotel and the vast LKAB mines. The adventurous amongst you can also try your hand at dog-sledging or snowmobiling.

Heading down the frozen Baltic coast, we will be based in cabins each night as we again cross the Arctic Circle working our way south. A visit will be scheduled to the world famous axe forge at Gränsfors where the friendly artisans manufacture the best quality ‘yxor’ using traditional methods and materials.

Some team members may leave the convoy by air, whilst the rest route across Europe to return to England. No matter how you end your trip, every member of the Northern Lights Chase will return tired but happy, with a proud sense of achievement and memories to last a lifetime.
